
André Viette is a horticulturist, author and lecturer. He earned his Biological Science certificate at The State University of New York at Farmingdale, and he is a graduate of The School of Floriculture of Cornell University. He has developed André Viette Farm and Nursery in Fishersville, Virginia, which grows over 3,000 varieties of perennials for the sun and shade.
For 29 years André has taught ten different horticultural courses at Blue Ridge Community College and conducts a radio gardening program for WSVA in Harrisonburg, Virginia. André’s national weekly three-hour call-in radio program, ‘In The Garden’, airs in four states, and Washington, D.C., every Saturday, from 8:00 to 11:00 A.M.
André is the recipient of the 2004 Liberty Hyde Bailey Award, the highest honor given by the American Horticultural Society.
In 2001 he received the PPA’s ‘Award of Merit’
The Garden Club of America awarded André Viette its 1999 ‘Medal of Honor’ for his outstanding service to horticulture.
In 1999 André Viette received ‘The Garden Media Promotion Award’ from the Perennial Plant Association for his use of the media in education and promotion resulting in public awareness of the perennial plant industry.
André Viette received the ‘1995 Allied Professional Award’ from the Virginia Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. This award is given to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the profession of landscape architecture.
André received The American Horticultural Society Award for ‘Commercial-Individual Contribution to Horticulture’. The Headwaters Soils and Water District named him ‘Conservation Farmer of the Year’. He has received the Regional Service Award from the American Hemerocallis Society. In 1992 he received the ‘Distinguished Lecturer Award’ from the American Horticultural Society at Ameriflora in Columbus, Ohio.
André Viette was editor and contributor for The American Horticultural Society “Flower Finder” by Simon and Schuster. He was one of the nine authors for ‘The Hosta Book” by Timber Press, and was consultant for the “Time Life Complete Gardener Perennial Book”. He is co-author of the Mid-Atlantic Gardeners Guide, The Jackson & Perkins “Beautiful Roses Made Easy” Mid-Atlantic and New England Edition”, The Jackson & Perkins “Selecting, Growing and Combining Outstanding Perennials” Mid-Atlantic and New England Edition, “Month-By-Month Gardening in the Mid-Atlantic, and “Month-By-Month Gardening in New York” all published by Cool Springs Press. In addition, André has contributed articles for many journals, national magazines and newspapers.
In 1986 André Viette was appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture to serve on the Advisory Council of the United States National Arboretum in Washington, D. C. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Advisory Board of the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum, and has served as president of the 1200 member Perennial Plant Association.
Mr. Viette’s hobby is photography and he has a collection of almost 50,000 slides.
