Hosta - The Perfect Shade Perennial

Not all beautiful perennials need to have full sun to grow in your garden. One of the finest woodland plants and ground covers for the shade or part shade is the Hosta. These fabulous perennials are very hardy, long-lived, and very easy to care for. They combine well with a wide variety of other beautiful shade plants.

Great Foliage

Hosta are normally grown for their diverse foliage and the bold statement that they make in the garden. They come in all shapes and sizes, and in many different foliage colors and patterns. There are  hundreds of unique varieties to choose from. The large-leaved hosta make excellent specimen plants in the garden. Hosta 'Sum and Substance' is one of the largest and most spectacular of the all the hosta varieties. It has huge rounded leaves of chartreuse-green that measure 16" long by 14" wide! This giant hosta makes quite a focal point in the shade or woodland garden! It can also tolerate a sunny location as long as it gets adequate water and is well mulched.
For a large blue-leaved hosta, try Hosta 'Blue Angel' or Hosta sieboldiana 'Elegans'.

Striking Variegated Forms

New to our Hosta collection this year is the elegant Hosta 'His Honor'. This beautiful new hosta has large heavily puckered green leaves with a wide creamy yellow margin. What an outstanding addition to your garden! Another beautiful variegated hosta is Hosta 'Francee' with its neat dark green leaves and narrow crisp white margins. Hosta 'June' has stunning gold centered leaves with wide blue-green margins. It has lovely thick textured foliage that is quite slug resistant - an added bonus! For a large, very unique variegated hosta, try Hosta 'Guacomole'. This striking hosta has large, shiny, heart-shaped green leaves with a golden center. Give this one some sun and watch the leaf color intensify!
